Night in the Pavilion Du Fu (Tang Dynasty) The year's end hastens the short days, frost and snow clear the cold night at the ends of the earth. The drums and horns sound mournfully at dawn, the Milky Way's reflection trembles in the Three Gorges. The cries of war are heard from a thousand homes in the wilderness, the songs of barbarians rise from a few fishing and woodcutting villages. (A thousand homes, or several homes) The dragon and the horse, once powerful, now lie buried in the yellow earth, human affairs and correspondence are utterly desolate. (Correspondence, or lingering)
