Iggy Pop wrote this song in 1977
When Iggy Pop met Kuelan Nguyen, they couldn’t even communicate. Nguyen spoke Vietnamese and French, and Pop only spoke English. And so when Pop was excitedly revealing his feelings to her, she could only say “Shhhh…” to get him to calm down. She couldn’t understand him.
Pop knew absolutely nothing about Nguyen, except that she was the partner of his friend, the French actor, Jacques Higuelan. But he was entranced by her looks. And admittedly, Nguyen WAS a looker, but there was very much a cultural and linguistic divide.
So what exactly was Pop in love with? Orientalism: this notion that the Far East conveys this feminine purity that would be wrecked if the West touches it—and in Nguyen, Pop thought he found his Oriental ideal.
Hence, these lyrics:
My little China girl
You shouldn’t mess with me
I’ll ruin everything you are
A few years later, Bowie releases his version of the song, which was more upbeat. He did it as a favor to Iggy Pop, who was broke.
The word "china" can mean "fragile". In the context of Iggy Pop it could also denote the white powder, but it is pretty clear that he meant Nguyen, a real girl, and was not squeamish about fetishizing her.
And so to the PMV. The song was about a Vietnamese girl but "china" was an orientalist trope. There are musical clichès in the Bowie version and visual ones in the Bowiw video.
