AV1
AV1 represents the forefront of video encoding technology, surpassing its predecessors in both quality and efficiency. This cutting-edge codec not only delivers superior video quality but also achieves a remarkable reduction in the necessary bitrate to maintain the same level of quality as an H.264-encoded video.
PMVHaven leverages the power of NVIDIA's Ada Lovelace architecture, complemented by a dedicated NVENC AV1 format, in conjunction with an RTX 4090 GPU, to optimize the encoding process for high-quality videos. While the majority of content on PMVHaven is encoded using H.264, this choice is made to ensure compatibility with older devices that lack AV1 decoders. However, for larger videos and especially 4K content, you may occasionally encounter the distinctive AV1 Encoded chip, which is depicted as follows:
This Video is Encoded with AV1
This chip marks that the streamable version on PMVHaven is encoded with AV1. (please note that vidoes before the 4th of Novemeber 2023 may not have this chip)
If you're using a browser or device of an older generation you may find that av1-encoded videos don't always load, if that's the case we advice you to change to a browser that has an inbuilt av1 decoder or download the source file directly from the download section
Here's an illustration of a video with a low bitrate (2000 kbits/s) encoded in both AV1 and H.264 formats. Despite their identical size and bitrate, if your device and browser support AV1, you can expect a noticeable improvement in video quality:
AV1 ACC MP4 - 39.57 MB 2000 kbits/s
h264 ACC MP4 - 39.57 MB 2000 kbits/s
If you encounter difficulties loading the video on the left, it's probable that your browser or device lacks support for AV1 decoding.
